Move over Jon Snow
Another Netflix "because you watched" show, I thought I would watch an episode or two and go back to playing some Overwatch. The Last Kingdom took me by surprise by not being another god awful Viking nonsense show.
Even though I enjoy the Vikings show on the History Channel, I thought it became kind of bloated and incoherent at times. It's refreshing to see another Viking show which doesn't focus on Ragnar Lothbrok, but keeps you immersed in the Viking lore.
In The Last Kingdom we follow Uhthred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon noble who gets captured by Vikings but grows up to be part of Earl Ragnar's family, but then ends up fighting for the Saxons against the Vikings when he is older, but then kind of fights against the Saxons. Yeah it sounds cliche and a bit awful, but the journey that Uhthred goes through is actually pretty believable given his situation. Which make all of his angst and rebellious attitude mostly justified.
Teaching some plebs how to Shield Wall
Minus the generic beginning of the series, I have to say it was definitely an entertaining show throughout without any real filler episodes which is helped by it's 8 episode run. Expect to see some violence and nudity, but nothing in the vain of a Spartacus or Game of Thrones. The action and tension can definitely rival either of those shows though, which is hard to be to admit being such a big fan of both. When you get to see someone JUMP OVER a shield wall to try and kill one specific guy or one person trying to escape a fort filled with troops suddenly turned hostile, you know you're in for a treat.
Definitely give this show a chance if you're a fan of this sort of genre. The action is good, the characters and story are entertaining, and it has Vikings doing Viking stuff. You will be mildly annoyed by the main character for the majority of the series due to his often dumb and emotional decision, but you still root for him considering he is a dream boat bad ass. Much like my fan favorite Jon Snow!
TWO THUMBS UP! Check out The Last Kingdom on Netflix.
